Agricultural Aid

Cultivation of land and farming are amongst the most basic of human activities. Although we take it for granted, self sufficiency in farming is vital for a community, especially in developing regions.

As well as providing a source of food, the agricultural sector is a major contributor to the national economy in developing countries and, more importantly, in many areas is the major or only source of employment. For farmers and their workers the success of a farm or cultivation -- somtimes only a handful of cattle even -- can be the difference between hope and poverty. Even the ability to send children to school and pay for their learning materials can depend on basic agriculture and healthy livestock.

Given this, imagine the consequences when a farmer looses his crop or livestock to a flood or other natural disaster. Imagine also the way in which a life can be improved with a small investment in establishing a farmer. Muslim Hands' Agricultural and Livestock Aid programme aims to help poor and needy farmers establish themselves.

Some of the projects undertaken by the scheme:

• Sheep Farming - Kabul, Afghanistan
  Having suffered from years of civil war, the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan brought further misery to the life of ordinary Afghanis. Poor shepherds were given flocks of sheep to rear as a source of income.

• Insecticide Spraying - Darfur, Sudan
  In this disaster hit region teams were equipped with insecticide and spraying equipment, trained in the responsible use of insecticide and helped protect farmland from attack and consumption by insects who risked destroying the little food that remained.

• Dairy Cows - Assam, India
  The programme in Assam is ongoing and helps poor individuals such as widows, as well as existing farmers who loose their livestock due to disease or disaster such as floods.

• Goat Farm - Pokhariya , Nepal
  Muslim Hands established a farm in the Pokhariya region of Nepal. The scheme provides job opportunities for individuals in the local area and any funds that are generated from the scheme are reinvested back into the local community for social welfare projects.
