Cash (+)
Zakah is due on cash held, whether at home or in a bank account.
Held in hand or in a bank account:

Zakah is also due on money you have lent to others or are otherwise owed. In the case of loans which are
insecure, there is the option to delay paying zakah until the amount has been repaid, at which time
zakah from all previous years will be due also.
Money you are owed:

In the case of shares bought speculatively, i.e. for later sale at a profit, zakah is due on the value of
the shares themselves. In the case of shares held for the long term and returns from dividends zakah is
due on the value of the company's zakatable assets and one should pay a portion of this equal to one's
shareholding relative to the number of shares in the company.

Liabilities (-)
Liabilities represent money you owe to others. In general, to calculate zakah due debt and other liabilities are
deducted from one's wealth and if the reminder exceeds the nisab zakah is due on the total. An exception however
is a large debt that is repaid in installments, such as money borrowed to purchase a house. In this case only
payments currently due (e.g. this month's pending payment) are deducted from wealth, and zakah is due if this
total exceeds the nisab.

Nisab
Zakah is only due if the value of one's wealth exceeds the nisab (87.5 grammes of gold or its cash equivalent). At current
market prices (as at 04/02/2012) the nisab is 3.516,70 € .
