Gaza, home to 1.5 million Palestinians in an area of just 360 sq. km, has suffered immensely since the intifada of 2000 and in particular since mid-2007. Unemployment runs at over 35% and some 80% of its inhabitants are dependent on direct aid.
Given this, food distribution is a simple yet extremely effective way of helping those most disadvantaged. This is especially true during the blessed month of Ramadhan:
The Prophet (saws) said: "Anyone who offers meal for the breaking of the fast of another person earns the same merit as the one who was observing the fast without diminishing in any way the recompense of the fasting person." [Tirmidhi]
Muslim Hands has an office in Gaza and local staff that were able to identify the most needy recipients and distribute the packages effectively.
An It's My Project
Carried out as an IMP project on behalf of a donor, food distribution took place in Ramadhan 2007 to needy families throughout the Gaza Strip. Parcels containing basic foodstuffs such as rice and cooking oil were distributed to 1,000 families at a cost of $23.25 each. The total cost of the project was thus $23,250.
