An estimated 1,000,000 refugees have been displaced from their homes as fighting in the Swat Valley between government forces and militants intensifies. As the refugees are pouring in, Muslim Hands camps are being established in Shaikh Yaseen and Shahzad Towns in Mardan to address the immediate needs of the thousands of internally displaced people.
On the ground updates
Muslim Hands continues to work for the displaced refugees of the conflict working in Sheikh Shahzad camp in Mardan. MH Pakistan has provided essential drinking water facilities and food for the refugee communities living with scarce resources.
School supplies for the children of Sheikh Shahzad Camp, Mardan and Shah Mansoor Camp, Swabi.
MH Pakistan has distributed vital school supplies and equipment to internally displaced children living in the makeshift Sheikh Shahzad Camp. With the stress of being refugees with an uncertain future, children in Sheikh Shahzad Camp have had a sense of normality restored to them through attending MH Camp School. A total of 431 children attend the camp school in Mardan, over half of them young girls. In Shah Mansoor Camp, a total of 754 children are enrolled in the camp school with the age range of children from playgroup, nursery up until Year 10.
As well as providing classroom facilities, MH Pakistan has provided school bags, books, notepads and stationery to all the students in the Sheikh Shahzad and Shah Mansoor Camp schools. Children have also been provided with a play area for recreation and are begin to establish a routine in extremely difficult circumstances.
Free mother and child medical clinic for Sheikh Shahzad Camp, Mardan
Women with infant children are the most vulnerable of all people in the makeshift refugee camps in Mardan. Many suffer from sickness and illness with little hope of diagnosis, let alone treatment. MH Pakistan has set up a Mother and Child Healthcare clinic to provide medical assistance to the refugees of Sheikh Shahzad Camp. So far, the healthcare clinic has treated over 340 sick children as well as 277 mothers and 143 men. Many more will continue to benefit from this lifesaving service insha’Allah.
Free mother and child medical clinic for Shah Mansoor Camp, Swabi
Muslim Hands has provided almost 1800 patients with vital medical assistance in Shah Mansoor Camp in Swabi. With so many people living together in cramped conditions, illness spreads quickly as access to medical care and sanitation is scarce. The sick and injured- mostly made up of mothers and children- are treated by local doctors who are able to see and treat 85 patients a day.
Tent number 16 may be made up of a sheets, but for Wazir Gul it is housing him, his wife and six children. When their house was destroyed in the conflict, his three sons, three daughters and wife trekked the merciless terrain from Mingora to Landaki trying to find a place which was stable enough to stay. Finally finding a bus willing to transport them, the family finally found safety in MH-run Shahzad camp in Mardan.
Wazir’s oldest two children were enrolled in the MH Camp School and now attend throughout the week. The family have also benefitted from the MH Health Clinic and Wazir’s son Hazrat Ali promptly volunteered himself to work as an attendant- giving back through his time and skills. Wazir’s family have tried to make Tent 16 a livable home, but circumstances will soon become unbearable in the longer term as the family lack regular access to food, home use items and drinking water. Your donations help families like Wazirs to help the family recover their standard of living.
What has been happening
The long-term and established presence of Muslim Hands in the region facilitated the timely set-up of feeding centres when the crisis unfolded during April. More than 1050 displaced families have been provided with food in the Khungi Camp in Timargarah and further aid teams have been mobilised in Swabi, Mardan and Jalozai. With each campsite currently providing shelter to 2500 children, Muslim Hands is focusing on healthcare and food distribution. Our teams on the ground have drawn in resources from other parts of Pakistan to be redeployed in the refugee camps. These include ambulances, makeshift clinics as well as doctors from Islamabad to treat the sick and injured on site.
An additional half a million people from Swat, Buner and Dir are fleeing their homes and will need food, shelter and water. With the violence intensifying, the flow of refugees is expected to increase in the coming weeks.
The refugee crisis continues in historic proportions. With your help, Muslim Hands will provide water, medical care and temporary schooling to the displaced communities who have fled their homes in fear for their lives. There is no end in sight to the violence.
Act now to save lives.
