teach a man to fish, he feeds himself for the rest of his life.”
MH Income Generation Schemes help to develop rural communities through business start-up grants, agricultural aid schemes, and revolving loans. From rickshaws for land-less labourers in Bangladesh to goat farming for Tsunami victims in Indonesia, the success of these schemes has been astounding.
In 2007 Muslim Hands initiated a mint farming scheme to help and support poor farmers in rural areas of Morocco. By providing farmers with farming tools, seeds, phosphor, packing materials and watering utilities for the land, MH has enabled a number of poor families to become self reliant and generate a sustainable income to help towards living, housing and education.
As part of the MH Great Charity Gifts Scheme, households in Senegal were trained in small-scale chicken farming. The local MH staff helped to build pens for the chickens and our vet visits regularly to ensure the chickens remain healthy. Alhamdulillah, with the modest number of only 50 egg laying chickens each, the households now have enough protein-rich eggs to eat and sell at the market.
