The struggle for life
Set in the remote eastern region of Ethiopia, Denan is a small town which has been devastated by drought, instability and abject poverty.
Forgotten sufferers of the Denan Crisis
Refugee families leave their homes and possessions behind to walk for days to reach the refugee camp with no guarantee of food or safe water. The skeletal remains of animals litter the route to Denan and the desperation of the refugee families is almost tangible. The refugee families are in desperate need of food, water and medicine.
Over 7000 refugee families live in dire need of your support with new arrivals flooding the camp on a daily basis. Your donation will, quite literally, save lives insha'Allah.
MH in Africa
Muslim Hands is experienced in famine and drought relief in Africa working with refugee communities who have been displaced from their homes and forced to live in squalid makeshift camps.
Today MH is providing essential food, water, education and medical care in 18 of the poorest countries in Africa.
Niger & Mali
In 2006, Niger suffered its worst food crisis since 1984. Over 3.5 million people faced starvation and hundreds of children lost their lives every day.
MH has allocated over £350,000 and teams from MH Sudan and MH Gambia were deployed to help organise and distribute food, water and other essentials in the region.
More than 600 tonnes of staple food was distributed and reached over 40,000 people in the areas of Niamey and Gao.
Somalia War
Already ravaged by the drought, Somalia fell into civil war.
Fighting in-and-around the Somali capital Mogadishu killed over 1,000 people and sent 400,000 fleeing from their homes in April 2007.
MH teams from Sudan served over 1,000 families and vaccinated 3,000 children in the Anole area, 40km north of Mogadishu.
Kenya, Ethiopia & Somalia
The Horn of Africa witnessed the worst drought in living memory in 2005/6, affecting over 11,000,000 people across the region including Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya and Malawi.
MH teams responded immediately with food and basic medical aid.
Ethiopia Floods
Immediately after the severe drought (see above) Ethiopia suffered heavy flooding, MH supported poor farmers and labourers in the Godey and Kalafo areas coordinating operations from the regional capital Jigjiga.
All of whom had lost their crops and livestock which they depended on for survival.

- Emergency Relief
The world we live in is full of inequality. When conflict or natural disasters occur, countries that are not economically developed are usually unable to cope with and recover from destruction.
